This week, “MK Confidential” opens on a warm weekday evening in Wheaton, Maryland, an inner suburb just north of D.C. On October 2, 2002, a low, flat, pop sound breaks the evening buzz of errands outside a grocery store. Those nearby think of it as a blown-out tire or a falling pallet of goods. One man drops to the asphalt. James Martin, a fifty-five-year-old husband, father, and Vietnam veteran, bleeds out in a parking lot. He will not be the last. Five people in sixteen hours, each shot with a single round of .223, fired from the same rifle.
